Collaborative Tools: Slack and Microsoft Teams

How to streamline team communication and collaboration.

Question

Our organisation runs on Teams and someone suggested giving mentees guest accounts so everything happens in one place. It would certainly be tidier for us. Is there a reason not to?

Tidier for you is the warning sign in that sentence. Slack and Teams are staff tools. They assume everyone is inside one organisation, works to the same rhythm and has a reason to keep the app open. A mentee has none of that.

What you would be asking her to do is create an account tied to your organisation, install another app, learn a new interface, and receive notifications from a workspace where your colleagues are also talking. The cost lands on the person with the least time and the oldest phone.

Guest access has its own edges as well. What a guest can see is a configuration decision, and it is easy to get wrong in a way nobody notices until a guest reads a channel they should not have.
