Job Portals: EURES and Indeed

Effective job search strategies using digital platforms.

Question

We point mentees at EURES because it is the official European portal. One woman spent weeks applying through it for jobs in another country and then found out she could not take them without sorting out permission to work there first. I feel responsible for that. What should I have known?

What EURES is built for. It is the portal supporting free movement of workers within the European labour market, which is a right held by EU nationals. A third-country national can register and search, and many services are open without registration, but the underlying right that makes cross-border applying straightforward is not automatically hers.

For a non-EU national, whether she can work in another Member State depends on national immigration law and on her own status, not on the portal. A long-term resident permit, a Blue Card and a permit tied to one employer in one country give completely different answers. So the question to settle before any cross-border job search is which country she may work in, and on what basis.

This is not a reason to avoid EURES. It is a reason to check the permission question first and to say plainly that the portal does not check it for her.

Understood. For local searching, is a commercial site like Indeed any better or worse?

Different rather than better. A commercial aggregator has more listings and less quality control, which means more real jobs and also more reposted, expired and fraudulent ones. That matters for this group specifically, because job scams aimed at people who need work urgently are common: anything asking for payment for training, for documents, or for a fee to secure a position is not a job.

Two things worth doing rather than choosing a portal. Set up the profile once, properly, on whichever site the local employers actually use, and find that out by asking employers rather than guessing. And put the qualification question in parallel: Europass has guidance written specifically for third-country nationals on presenting skills and qualifications, and the ENIC-NARIC centre in your country tells you who decides on recognition.

Add one more habit. Applications that vanish without a reply are the norm on aggregators, and a mentee reading four silences as four rejections of her personally will stop applying. Say at the start what the response rate looks like so that silence is information rather than a verdict.
